Circularity Assessment Protocol

A systems method of collaborative and open data collection for communities to use for decision- and policy-making

Goal

Conduct research in Metro Manila using the Circularity Assessment Protocol (CAP), a systems method of collaborative and open data collection for communities to use for decision- and policy-making

In 2021, we served as the local implementing partner to conduct field work in three cities within Metro Manila. Field work included product and packaging assessments in stores across the city; material type characterizations for consumer plastic items; cost analysis of reusable products and alternatives to plastic available in the city; visual audits of recycling contamination; identification of public waste and recycling collection bins; and litter transects in three categories of population. We co-wrote a publication entitled "The Circularity Assessment Protocol in Cities to Reduce Plastic Pollution," published in Community Science.

Participants

Key stakeholder interviews conducted with representatives from the government, industry, informal waste workers, and non-profit organizations

How we made waves

Generated data on waste leakage for three cities and submitted outputs to the national and local governments
Contributed in writing and research for 'The Circularity Assessment Protocol in Cities to Reduce Plastic Pollution', published in Community Science

Partners

Jambeck Research Group-University of Georgia and the Local Government Units of Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, and Manila City
